| Art is the history of existence. Through time, the nude figure has connected the human form to both the mystery of creation and man’s consciousness of his own existence. The mystery has become inherent to the human form. Therefore, the nude, in art, was a reflection of the body and soul transforming man’s own understanding of his condition. Described by Aristotle’s “catharsis,” there is an immediate identification of this figure in art with the body of the person who perceives it.
Artists such as Michelangelo or Rodin, reading Dante, offered commentary on this subject by illustrating the voyage of man into the vertical circles of the mysteries of life. Their work was first informed by their own human condition and secondly by their artistic insight - thus, through the human body, they touched the great questions of mankind: Who are we? Where are we going? Why are we there? Are we alone? Have we created God or did God create us? |
