| The figure is an endless source of fascination and the most demanding of all subject matters for me. I find it powerful, and beautiful; full of fleeting subtleties, fragile and timeless. The figure continually challenges my drawing and painting skills. I am amazed by how the smallest of movements or changes in light can dramatically affect every ‘shadow pattern’, or the shape of each form. The body is enigmatic, one minute soft and rounded the next contorted and hard; the variations are endless, and therein lies its challenge and allure.
Figure painting has existed throughout history as a classic tradition. It has a timeless quality, but I combine it with a more contemporary set of imagery that is not only from this world, but also from my imagination. Abstraction, repetition, pattern and my own symbolism, are important components. I believe representational art should no longer be bound to traditional renaissance perspective, my work therefore seeks to combine all of these elements into a series of layers: a nod to computer graphics. My ultimate goal is to intrigue and engage the viewer while leaving them enough room to create their own narrative and insight into my work. |
